1. What is broadband?

A way of transmitting large amounts of data, voice, and video that is greater than telephony networks. ...

2. What units are used to measure bandwidth?

Most of us might not know what is the difference between kilobyte and kibibyte. One of the most confusing problems regarding PC statistics and measurements, where people misuse kibibytes as kilobytes because, the computers are more widely used nowadays, so the binary nature of digital computer lends them to think kilobyte as 1024. 1024 bytes is not really a kilobyte, it is a kibibyte. Kilo stands for 10^3, which is 1000, which is not equal to 1024. Kilobyte is a unit of information equal to 1000 bytes in SI unit. As a unit of computer storage, i.e., in Binary, the kilobyte is usually equal to 1024 bytes, this should be called as kibibyte. Don't get confused with kilobyte and kibibyte which lets you to calculate wrongly. The following table will help you in this difference.

3. How much faster is broadband than dial up?

ADSL Broadband is a high-speed Internet service (up to 140 times faster than dial up Internet) which uses an existing telephone line to connect to the Internet. ADSL1 is the most widely available type which is up to 140 times faster than dial up Internet. ADSL2+ can be much faster again and is the popular choice in areas that are ASDL2+ enabled.
OK, ADSL broadband is many times faster than dial up – but what are some other benefits?

Broadband Internet access, often shortened to just broadband, is high-speed Internet access—typically contrasted with dial-up access over a modem.

5. What are some of the advantages of using a broadband connection to download something like a video compared to dial up?


It's a lot faster so a video that would take an hour to download on a dial up connection, would take half that time or even less. This means that there's less chance of someone losing their patience and trashing their computer ;). Another good thing is that as soom as you turn on your computer, if you're using dial up, you'll always be online unlike dial up when you have to 'dial' a connection. Another great thing that I love about broadband and hate about dial up is that you can use the phone and still be online but on dial up your phone line is tighed up for the data transfer so your stuck only talking to friends through msn.
